Listen now: The AI Assessment Scale with Mike Perkins

Written Introduction to Episode
Jennifer Taylorson is joined by Dr Mike Perkins, a leading international voice on AI in education, to explore the challenges and opportunities that generative AI presents for assessment in higher education.
Mike is Associate Professor and Head of the Centre for Research and Innovation at the British University Vietnam, and is best known for co-developing the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) – a widely adopted framework that supports educators in thinking critically about how and when, AI can be integrated into assessment practices. Now translated into more than 30 languages and used across hundreds of institutions worldwide, the scale has become a key reference point in ongoing conversations about academic integrity and assessment design in the age of AI.
In this conversation, Mike discusses the origins and purpose of the AI Assessment Scale, the challenges posed by generative AI to traditional forms of assessment, and how educators might respond through thoughtful redesign rather than restriction. The episode also explores the theoretical underpinnings of the scale, including sociocultural perspectives on learning, and considers how assessment, curriculum design, and student experience intersect in an AI-mediated educational landscape.
The AI Assessment Scale was developed collaboratively with Leon Furze, Jasper Roe, and Jason MacVaugh, whose contributions are also acknowledged in this episode.
